Large Intestine - an overview | Humanphysiology

-> Tube-like organ that connected to the small intestine on one side and anus on the other side.
-> Other name for the large intestine is the colon.
-> Large intestine is around 6 feet in length while the small intestine is 21 feet long.

Parts of the large intestine

Caecum
Colon
Rectum
Anal canal

Caecum and Appendix:-

(a). Food that has been absorbed. It leaves the small intestine and passes to the large intestine at the Caecum.
(b). Contents which come from ILeum, the caecum start the absorption of water and salts.
(c). Caecum is about 6 cm long and extends downwards into the appendix
(d). Appendix stores the good bacteria.

Colon:-

At the other end of the caecum joins up with the colon.
(a). This is a large portion of the large intestine where undigested food starts to move upwards through the ascending colon, situated on the right side of the abdomen.
(b). Ascending colon bends near the liver at the right colon flexure and becomes the transverse colon passing through the crossing on the left side of the abdomen.
(c). Just above the spleen at the left colic flexure, the transverse colon becomes the descending colon which runs down the left of the abdomen then descending colon transforms into the sigmoid colon.

Rectum, anal canal, and anus:-

(a). Large intestine opens into the rectum when it comes afterward by the anal canal.
(b). Rectum is 20cm long.
(c). It continued with the sigmoid colon and connects with the anal canal and anas.
(d). In the Rectum faeces (a waste product) are stored before elimination.
(e). Faeces then goes into the anus for elimination.
(f). Elimination did by the anus.
